Overview

Palanga is where Lithuania goes to the seaside: a pine-backed beach, a wooden pier and a promenade of cafes, with a count’s palace in a hundred-hectare park holding the country’s amber collection. This six-hour tour spends the morning there and comes back through the old town of Klaipėda.

Itinerary

  1. Meeting by the ship

Meeting by the ship. The start time of the tour is given approximately and will be adjusted depending on your ship arrival time. The exact meeting time will be specified on your confirmation letter.

  2. Drive to Palanga

A drive of about half an hour up the coast

  3. Palanga Amber Museum

A visit to the Amber Museum, housed since 1963 in the palace Count Feliks Tyszkiewicz built in 1897. Its collection runs to tens of thousands of pieces, among them some of the largest lumps of Baltic amber ever found and many holding insects and plants caught in pine resin about forty million years ago. The displays explain how amber forms, how it is fished from the sea and worked, and why this coast has traded it since antiquity.

  4. Botanical park

A walk in the park around the palace, laid out in 1897 by the French landscape architect Édouard André on a hundred hectares of dune and pine, with rose gardens, ponds and paths leading to Birutė Hill, a pagan sanctuary before it was a chapel.

  5. Church of the Assumption

The neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, finished in 1907, whose red brick spire is the tallest thing in Palanga, with a carved pulpit and a marble altar with wooden reliefs inside.

  6. Basanavičiaus street and the pier

Free time on Basanavičiaus street, the pedestrian promenade of cafes and stalls that runs down to the wooden pier over the sea. Walkers on the beach still find amber washed up after a storm.

  7. Drive to Klaipėda

The half-hour drive back down the coast

  8. Klaipėda old town

A walk through the old town of Klaipėda, German Memel until 1923 and laid out on a Dutch grid of half-timbered warehouses. You cross the chain bridge to the site of the castle the Teutonic Order founded in 1252, of which the moat and earthworks survive, and reach Theatre Square, where the Ännchen von Tharau fountain stands in front of the drama theatre, put up for the girl in Simon Dach's love poem of the 1630s. Small bronzes are hidden all over the lanes, among them a mouse said to grant whispered wishes, a cat with a gentleman's face and a chimney sweep on a roof.

  9. Return to the ship

The tour ends with the transfer to the cruise port
