Curonian Spit and Klaipėda Old Town
Cross to the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit for sweeping dunes, Nida's wooden houses and amber heritage, then glimpse Klaipėda Old Town.
Klaipėda was Memel until 1923, the northernmost city of Germany, and its old town still has the Dutch grid of warehouse streets that trade built. Three hours on foot cover the castle site, the squares, the bastions and the small bronze sculptures that the town has hidden in its lanes for visitors to find.
The tour covers:
Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.
Meeting by the ship
Meeting by the ship. The start time of the tour is given approximately and will be adjusted depending on your ship arrival time. The exact meeting time will be specified on your confirmation letter.
Walk to the old town
Your guide meets you at the terminal beside the bronze boy waving at arriving ships, and the walk crosses the chain bridge into the old town.
Klaipėda Castle
The site of the castle the Teutonic Order founded in 1252 as Memelburg, of which the ramparts, moat and cellars survive, with the story of how the town grew up around it.
Theatre Square
Theatre Square, the centre of the old town, named for the drama theatre on its north side. The fountain in front of it honours Ännchen von Tharau, the girl in Simon Dach's love poem of the 1630s, and the square has been the town's meeting place for four centuries.
Sculptures in the lanes
The small bronzes scattered through the old town: the mouse that is said to grant a wish whispered into its ear, the cat with a gentleman's face, the chimney sweep on the roofline and others your guide will find for you.
Jonas Hill
Jonas Hill, the best-preserved piece of the old defences. Klaipėda's ring of bastions and ravelins was among the largest fortification systems on the Baltic, and the earthworks here show how it was built.
Amber Queen Museum
A visit to the Amber Queen gallery, whose collection runs from raw Baltic amber and pieces with insects trapped inside to antique jewellery and carved art.
End of the tour
The tour ends in the old town. Your guide can point you to somewhere for traditional Lithuanian food, and the ship is a short walk away.
