Curonian Spit and Klaipėda Old Town

  • Private tour
  • Duration: 8 h
  • Moderate walking
  • Multiple languages

Overview

The Curonian Spit is a strip of sand ninety-eight kilometres long and rarely more than a kilometre wide, with the Baltic on one side and a shallow lagoon on the other. Its dunes once swallowed villages whole until foresters pinned them down with pine. This eight-hour tour goes the length of the Lithuanian half, with stops at two of its villages and the great dune above Nida.

The tour covers:

  • Ferry crossings and the national park fee
  • Juodkrantė, the Hill of Witches and the amber bay
  • A walk on the grey dunes
  • Nida, its wooden houses and the Parnidis dune
  • The Mizgiriai amber gallery and a look at Klaipėda old town

Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

What you will see

  • The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO site of dunes held down by pine
  • Juodkrantė, the Hill of Witches and the old amber workings
  • A walk on the grey dunes above the lagoon
  • Nida, the Parnidis dune and the Mizgiriai amber gallery
  • Ferry crossings and the park fee included in the price

Itinerary

  1. Meeting by the ship

Meeting by the ship. The start time of the tour is given approximately and will be adjusted depending on your ship arrival time. The exact meeting time will be specified on your confirmation letter.

  2. Ferry to the spit

The short ferry crossing from Klaipėda to Smiltynė and the drive south down the spit. The Curonian Spit is a sandbar ninety-eight kilometres long, in places only a few hundred metres wide, dividing the lagoon from the open Baltic. Millions of migrating birds pass along it each spring and autumn, and UNESCO listed it in 2000.

  3. Juodkrantė

A stop in Juodkrantė, one of the oldest settlements on the spit. Amber was dredged in quantity from the lagoon here in the 1850s, which is why the bay carries the name; the wooded slope above the village holds the Hill of Witches, a trail lined with carved wooden figures from Lithuanian folk tales.

  4. Grey dunes

A walk on the grey dunes, the older, part-vegetated sand hills. The spit was almost destroyed in the 18th and 19th centuries when felling for timber let the sand move and bury whole villages; the dunes were fixed by planting pine and marram grass, and the forest you drive through is the result of that work.

  5. Nida and the Parnidis dune

Time in Nida, a village of blue and brown fishermen's cottages and wooden villas where Thomas Mann built a summer house in 1930. Above it rises the Parnidis dune, about fifty metres high and one of the tallest drifting dunes in Europe, with a granite sundial on top and a view over sand, lagoon and sea at once.

  6. Mizgiriai Amber Gallery

A visit to the Mizgiriai gallery in Nida, where the collection includes rare pieces holding insects that were trapped in pine resin some forty million years ago.

  7. Klaipėda old town

A short guided look at the old town and Theatre Square on the way back.

  8. Return to the ship

The tour ends near the port; the berth is about twenty minutes on foot, so you may stay in town instead.
