Private Tour of Barcelona with the Sagrada Família

  • Private tour
  • Duration: 6 h

Overview

Barcelona is a Roman town under a medieval one under a 19th-century grid, with Gaudí’s buildings scattered through all three. This six-hour tour starts high on Montjuïc for the view, works down through the old city and ends at the Sagrada Família, which has been building for more than a hundred and forty years. A licensed guide and a driver are yours alone for the day.

The tour covers:

  • Montjuïc, the Palau Nacional and the panoramic views
  • Plaça d’Espanya and the Arc de Triomf
  • The Gothic Quarter, the Roman walls and the cathedral
  • Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia
  • The Sagrada Família
  • Free time for lunch and shopping

Your return to the ship is guaranteed on time.

Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

Itinerary

  1. Meeting at the port

Meeting at the Barcelona cruise terminal, where your guide and driver are waiting. The start time is given approximately and will be adjusted to your ship's arrival; the exact time is on your confirmation letter.

  2. Montjuïc

Montjuïc, the hill above the port, with the widest view over the city and the sea. The Palau Nacional at the foot of it was built for the exhibition of 1929 and now holds the national collection of Catalan art, including the Romanesque frescoes lifted whole from Pyrenean churches.

  3. Plaça d'Espanya

Plaça d'Espanya, laid out for the same exhibition, with its fountain, its bullring turned shopping centre and the two brick towers, modelled on the campanile in Venice, that frame the avenue up to the palace.

  4. Arc de Triomf

The Arc de Triomf of 1888, built in red brick as the gateway to the Universal Exhibition, in a Moorish-influenced style that has nothing Roman about it but the shape.

  5. Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter, the oldest part of the city, where the Roman walls of Barcino still stand in places and the lanes are too narrow for cars. The cathedral was built between 1298 and 1420 over an early Christian basilica, and thirteen white geese are kept in its cloister for St Eulalia, who was thirteen when the Romans killed her.

  6. Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia, which Antoni Gaudí remodelled between 1904 and 1906. The balconies look like masks or skulls, the columns like bones, and the tiled roof like the back of the dragon St George killed, with a cross for the lance in its flank.

  7. Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família, begun in 1882 and taken over by Gaudí a year later, who worked on it until a tram killed him in 1926 and who is buried in the crypt. He left models rather than finished drawings, and the church has been built from them ever since, funded entirely by donations and ticket money. Its columns branch like trees to carry the vaults, the windows run from warm colours in the east to cool in the west, and the tower over the crossing will make it the tallest church in the world when it is finished.

  8. Free time

Free time on the Rambla de Catalunya and around, for lunch, shopping and a look at the Barceloneta beach front laid out for the Olympic Games of 1992.

  9. Return to the ship

The drive back to the cruise terminal, timed to your ship's departure
