Wines and Castles of Rhodes Private Shore Excursion

  • Private tour
  • Duration: 6 h
  • By car
  • Up to 16 guests
  • Moderate walking

Overview

Greece has been pressing oil and making wine for four thousand years, and Rhodes does both well. This full day pairs tastings at the island’s wine village with the sights that make the island: a knights’ castle, the acropolis at Lindos, a spring-fed valley and the medieval town. Lunch is included and your return to the ship is guaranteed.

The tour covers:

  • Kritinia Castle above the west coast
  • Embonas, with wine, honey and olive oil to taste
  • Lunch at a local taverna
  • Lindos, its village and its acropolis
  • Epta Piges, the Seven Springs and the tunnel
  • The medieval old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO site

Good to know:

  • Pick-up for cruise passengers is at Gate A, the main gate of the terminal.
  • If you are staying at a hotel, tell us where and we will confirm your pick-up time.
  • Infants travel on an adult’s lap; strollers can be carried, but wheelchairs cannot.
  • The tour needs a moderate level of fitness and takes 18 people at most.

Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

Itinerary

  1. Meeting at the port

Meeting at Gate A, the main gate of the Rhodes cruise terminal, where your guide and driver are waiting. Please be there ten minutes before the start time.

  2. Kritinia Castle

Kritinia Castle, standing on a hill 131 metres above the village on the west coast. The Knights of St John built it in the 15th century as one of a chain of watchtowers that could signal down the island, and the coats of arms of three grand masters are still cut into its walls. The village below was founded by families who fled Crete, which is what its name means: New Crete.

  3. Embonas

Embonas, a village on the slopes of Mount Attavyros and the wine capital of the island. Vines have been grown here since antiquity, the local Athiri and Mandilaria grapes make the island's best-known wines, and the village is far enough inland to have kept its own customs. You taste wine, honey and olive oil.

  4. Lunch

Lunch at a local taverna, included in the price

  5. Lindos

Lindos, a town that was already trading across the Mediterranean before Rhodes itself existed. Its acropolis stands on a rock 116 metres above the sea, where the Temple of Athena Lindia of the 4th century BC is wrapped inside a fortress the Knights of St John built around it, with a Roman stair and a Byzantine chapel in between. The white village below is a maze of captains' houses with pebble-mosaic courtyards.

  6. Epta Piges

Epta Piges, the Seven Springs, a shaded valley of plane and pine where cold water runs out of the rock. The Italians dammed it in 1931 to irrigate their new farms and cut a tunnel 186 metres long to carry the water to the lake; you can walk through the tunnel, ankle-deep, or take the path over the top.

  7. Rhodes Old Town

The old town of Rhodes, the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The Knights of St John held it from 1309 to 1522 and left four kilometres of walls, the Street of the Knights lined with the inns of their national tongues, and the Palace of the Grand Master at the top of it. The Ottomans who took it left mosques, baths and minarets among the same lanes.
