Rhodes Full-Day Exploration with Wine Tasting

  • Group tour
  • By car
  • Up to 18 guests

Overview

Rhodes has been a crossroads since antiquity and every ruler left something behind: a Greek acropolis at Lindos, a knights’ town behind four kilometres of wall, Ottoman minarets and Italian public works. This full-day tour takes them in with a sommelier guide, a wine and olive oil tasting, and free time where it matters.

The tour covers:

  • Mandraki harbour, the deer columns and the medieval windmills
  • Lindos, its village, its acropolis and St Paul’s Bay
  • An hour of wine tasting, with olive oil and honey
  • The medieval old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO site
  • A lunch box, and free time in Lindos and the old town

Your return to the ship is guaranteed on time.

Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

Itinerary

  1. Meeting at the port

Pick-up at the cruise terminal or your hotel, at a time set around your ship's schedule

  2. Mandraki harbour

Mandraki harbour, where the Colossus of Rhodes is supposed to have stood: a bronze figure of Helios about thirty-three metres tall, one of the seven wonders, which stood for barely fifty years before an earthquake brought it down in 226 BC. Two columns with a bronze deer and doe now mark the entrance, with the fort of St Nicholas and three medieval windmills along the mole.

  3. Lindos

Lindos, a town that was already trading across the Mediterranean before Rhodes itself existed. Its acropolis stands on a rock 116 metres above the sea, where the Temple of Athena Lindia of the 4th century BC is wrapped inside a fortress the Knights of St John built around it, with a Roman stair and a Byzantine chapel in between. The white village below is a maze of captains' houses with pebble-mosaic courtyards. Admission to the acropolis is 12 EUR and optional. There is free time in the village and at St Paul's Bay below it.

  4. Wine tasting

An hour at a local winery with your sommelier guide, tasting wines made from the island's own Athiri and Mandilaria grapes, with olive oil and honey alongside.

  5. Rhodes Old Town

The old town of Rhodes, the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The Knights of St John held it from 1309 to 1522 and left four kilometres of walls, the Street of the Knights lined with the inns of their national tongues, and the Palace of the Grand Master at the top of it. The Ottomans who took it left mosques, baths and minarets among the same lanes. There is free time here for shopping.
