Northern Zealand and Hamlet’s Castle at Kronborg

  • Private tour
  • Duration: 6 h
  • Moderate walking
  • Multiple languages

Overview

Two of the great castles of the north stand within half an hour of each other in the country above Copenhagen. Kronborg guards the narrows between Denmark and Sweden, where Danish kings taxed every ship entering the Baltic and where Shakespeare set Hamlet. Frederiksborg, built by the same king who enriched himself on those tolls, is the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia and now the national portrait museum.

The tour covers:

  • Kronborg Castle with a guide, admission included
  • The casemates and the story of Holger the Dane
  • Frederiksborg Castle, its coronation chapel and Great Hall
  • Free time for lunch and the baroque garden at Hillerød
  • A scenic drive along the coast and through northern Zealand

Please note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

What you will see

  • Kronborg, the castle Shakespeare made Elsinore in Hamlet
  • The narrows where Denmark taxed every ship entering the Baltic
  • Frederiksborg, the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia
  • The chapel, the great hall and the baroque garden at Hillerød
  • A scenic drive along the Danish coast and through the countryside

Itinerary

  1. Meeting by the ship

Meeting by the ship. The start time of the tour is given approximately and will be adjusted depending on your ship arrival time. The exact meeting time will be specified on your confirmation letter.

  2. Drive to Kronborg

An hour up the coast road through woods and seaside villages to Helsingør

  3. Kronborg Castle

A guided tour of Kronborg, built by Frederick II between 1574 and 1585 on the narrowest point of the Sound, where Denmark could see, and tax, every ship going into the Baltic. Those Sound Dues paid for the castle and much else besides. Shakespeare set Hamlet here as Elsinore, without ever visiting, and the play has been performed in the courtyard by everyone from Laurence Olivier onwards. Beneath the castle the casemates hold the statue of Holger the Dane, who legend says will wake when the country is in danger. UNESCO listed the castle in 2000.

  4. Drive to Hillerød

Half an hour inland through the lakes and beech woods of northern Zealand

  5. Frederiksborg Castle

A guided tour of Frederiksborg, built for Christian IV between 1600 and 1620 across three islets in a lake, and the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia. Fire gutted it in 1859; the brewer J. C. Jacobsen paid for the rebuilding on condition it became the Museum of National History, which it has been since 1878. The chapel survived the fire intact and Danish monarchs were crowned in it; the Great Hall above is hung with tapestries and portraits telling five hundred years of Danish history.

  6. Free time in Hillerød

Time for lunch and a walk in the baroque garden across the lake, with its terraces and cascades

  7. Return to the ship

The drive back to the cruise port in Copenhagen
