Paris is two and a half hours up the Seine valley from Le Havre, and a well-run day is enough to see the centre of it. This excursion is built around the ship’s schedule: a comfortable private car or minivan with air conditioning, a guide who knows what to skip, and free time at the end where you can shop, eat or simply stand on a rooftop and look at the city.

Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe, ordered by Napoleon in 1806 after Austerlitz and finished thirty years later, fifty metres high at the centre of twelve radiating avenues. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies beneath it, and its flame has been rekindled every evening since 1923.
Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower
The Trocadéro terrace, built for the exhibition of 1937 and the place every photograph of the Eiffel Tower is taken from. The tower itself went up for the exhibition of 1889, was meant to stand for twenty years, and is now three hundred and thirty metres of iron that Parisians were once petitioned to have removed.
Along the Seine
The drive along the Seine, whose banks through the middle of Paris are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the quays you see the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay in its converted railway station, the Île de la Cité and the towers of Notre-Dame, and the bridges from the Pont Neuf of 1607 onwards.
Place de la Concorde
Place de la Concorde, the largest square in the city, laid out in 1755 and renamed after the Revolution guillotined Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette on it. The obelisk in the middle is three thousand years old and came from the temple at Luxor in 1836. The Champs-Élysées runs from here to the Arc de Triomphe.
Place de l'Opéra
Place de l'Opéra, with Charles Garnier's opera house of 1875 at the head of it, all marble, gold and a grand staircase built to be seen on. The auditorium seats nearly two thousand under a ceiling Chagall painted in 1964, and the lake in the cellars gave Gaston Leroux his Phantom.
Free time at Galeries Lafayette
One to two hours of your own at Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann, the department store of 1912 under a stained-glass dome ten storeys up. The rooftop terrace is free and gives one of the best views in Paris, over the Opera to the Eiffel Tower.
