Overview

Rome is an hour and a quarter from the pier at Civitavecchia, and one well-planned day covers the sights everyone comes for: the largest church in Christendom, the amphitheatre that held fifty thousand, a dome nineteen centuries old that engineers still study, and the fountain you throw a coin into. Meeting at the port

Meeting at the Civitavecchia cruise terminal, where your guide and driver are waiting. The start time is given approximately and will be adjusted to your ship's arrival; the exact time is on your confirmation letter.
Drive to Rome

About an hour and a quarter down the coast and into the city
St Peter's Square and Basilica

St Peter's Square and Basilica. Bernini's colonnade of 1667, two arms of two hundred and eighty-four columns, was built to gather the crowd as if in an embrace. The basilica behind it went up between 1506 and 1626 over the tomb the first Christians marked as St Peter's, and Michelangelo's dome, finished after his death, rises a hundred and thirty-six metres. Inside are his Pietà, carved when he was twenty-four, and Bernini's bronze baldachin over the papal altar.
The Colosseum

The Colosseum, opened in AD 80 with a hundred days of games. Its four tiers held some fifty thousand people, seated strictly by rank, who were let in and out through eighty numbered arches in a matter of minutes. Under the floor lay two levels of cells and lifts for animals and fighters. The Arch of Constantine of AD 315 stands beside it, and the Roman Forum runs away behind.
Trajan's Forum

Trajan's Forum, the last and largest of the imperial forums, paid for with the spoils of the Dacian wars and opened in AD 112. Trajan's Column still stands complete, thirty metres of marble carved with a spiral relief of the campaign, and the brick halls of Trajan's Market rise in tiers behind it.
Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain, finished in 1762 to Nicola Salvi's design at the end of an aqueduct the Romans built in 19 BC. Ocean rides out of the rock on a shell chariot pulled by sea horses. Coins thrown over the left shoulder are collected nightly and given to charity, and they come to well over a million euros a year.
The Pantheon

The Pantheon, rebuilt by Hadrian around AD 126 and still, nineteen centuries later, the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. Its span and its height are identical, the concrete grows lighter as it rises, and the nine-metre opening at the top is the only source of light. It survived because it became a church in 609; Raphael is buried inside.
