Best of Stockholm Shore Excursion

  • Group tour
  • Duration: 5 h
  • Up to 26 guests
  • Moderate walking

Overview

Stockholm is built across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and this five-hour excursion takes in the two sights that best explain the city: a warship that never finished her first voyage, and the medieval island the capital grew from. You travel by air-conditioned coach with an English-speaking guide, and you are back at the ship with time to spare.

The tour covers:

  • The Vasa Museum and the salvaged 17th-century warship at its centre
  • A photo stop at City Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is held
  • A guided walk through the cobbled lanes of Gamla stan, past the Royal Palace and Stortorget
  • Free time in the Old Town for the cafes and craft shops

Please, note that the tour order and the time spent at each venue may vary.

What you will see

  • Five hours ashore with a private coach and an English-speaking guide
  • The Vasa, the world’s only almost intact ship from the 17th century
  • City Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is served every December
  • Cobbled lanes, merchant houses and narrow alleys in medieval Gamla stan
  • The Royal Palace, among the largest in Europe still in official use

Itinerary

  1. Meeting by the ship

Meeting by the ship. The start time of the tour is given approximately and will be adjusted depending on your ship arrival time. The exact meeting time will be specified on your confirmation letter.

  2. Panoramic drive

    Sightseeing ride through the city

  3. Stockholm City Hall

Photo stop at Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is held each December. Ragnar Östberg's building went up between 1911 and 1923 from nearly eight million dark red bricks of the kind once used for monasteries, and its tower rises 106 metres under Sweden's three crowns. Inside, the Blue Hall seats the banquet and the Golden Hall above it is lined with more than 18 million mosaic tiles. From the terrace on Lake Mälaren you look across to the Old Town and the islands of Riddarholmen and Södermalm.

  4. Transfer to Djurgården

A ride through the city to Vasa Museum

  5. Vasa Museum

A guided tour of the Vasa Museum, home to the only almost fully intact ship of the 17th century anywhere in the world. The Vasa was built for King Gustavus Adolphus between 1626 and 1628 and sank on her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628, some 1,300 metres out, in front of a crowd of thousands. Too much weight sat high in the hull and a gust was enough to push her over. She was raised in 1961 after 333 years on the harbour floor, and the museum built around her opened in 1990. Your guide reads the carved sterncastle, the gun decks and the story of the inquest that found nobody guilty.

  6. Transfer to the Old Town

Drive to the Old Town - Gamla stan

  7. Gamla stan walking tour

A guided walk through Gamla stan, the island where Stockholm began in the 13th century and where the street plan is still medieval. You pass the Royal Palace, one of Europe's largest still in use for its original purpose, with 1,430 rooms behind a facade built between 1697 and 1760 to Nicodemus Tessin the Younger's design; the monarch works here, though the family lives at Drottningholm. At Stortorget, ringed by tall merchant houses, your guide tells the story of the Stockholm Bloodbath of November 1520. Nearby stand Storkyrkan, consecrated in 1306 and the setting for coronations and royal weddings, with Bernt Notke's Saint George and the Dragon of 1489 inside; the Nobel Prize Museum in the old Stock Exchange; Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, under a metre wide at its narrowest; and Järnpojke, the palm-sized iron boy who is the smallest public monument in the city.

  8. Free time in Gamla stan

Free time in Stockholm’s Old Town. In the Old Town you will enjoy some free time to explore its narrow streets, small souvenir boutiques and lovely street cafes.
